GENERAL INFORMATION FOR CANCUN FLYFISHING AND SPINFISHING DAY TRIPS
The well known resort town of Cancun is a great setting for the warm weather travelers. Not so well known is the wonderfull flats fishing north of Cancun. The visiting anglers can experience a wide variety of shallow water/flats species. This Mexico fishing area is quite pristine and is home to many diferent species of birds, including rarely seen species. Flyfishers have a very good chance of getting a super grand slam (tarpon, snook, bonefish and permit) on a single fishing day. This is light tackle fishing at its best for both flyfishing and conventional fishing.Area Fished : 30-45 minutes drive north of Cancun. If your hotel is in the main Cancun hotel strip, the guide will pick you up and drive you each morning to the fishing grounds. If your hotel is outside the strip, you can arrange transportation from your hotel to the Blue Bay Club where you will meet your guide for each fishing day. Our guides are the only flats guides in the area we fish. Other than our guides there are not other recreational users on the flats we fish. The flats area north of Cancun is quite diverse. Anglers will experience fishing in shallow sandy flats, lagoons, channels, holes in flats, grassy flats, mangrove flats and open ocean. Most all of the fishing is done from the boat, although there are a few flats that may be waded. The bottom is mostly soft mud, not good for the angler who solely wishes to walk the flats.
ISLA BLANCA FLATS NORTH OF CANCUN
Very few anglers knows that only 25 miles north of the world famous resort town of Cancun there exist one of the best flats fishing spots in the world for Super Grand Slams (tarpon, permit, snook and bonefish). It is known as Isla Blanca lagoon.
The Isla Blanca lagoon is a maze of 12 square miles full of mangrove shallow flats, sandy flats, grassy flats, mud flats, coves, inlets, grassy holes, shallow and open waters. This lagoon is teeming with hungry schooling tarpon, permit, snook and bonefish along with plenty of speckled trout, lady fish, snapper, jack, barracuda, small shark etc.The fishing area is quite diverse and the anglers have a very good chance of getting a "Super Grand Slam" (tarpon, snook, permit and bonefish) or a "Grand Slam" (3 out of 4) in a single or more fishing days. This is the fisherman’s delight for both the fly fishing and the conventional angler.
COZUMEL FLYFISHING AND SPINFISHING
Ancient Mayans considered Isla Mujeres the island a home for the goddess Ixchel, devoted to love and fertility, all the future wives of that time made the venture from the mainland at least once in their lifetime. Today Cozumel has become a dream destination for nature lovers & divers all around the world, has only one town called San Miguel in the west side of the Island. Hotels & Resorts are located along this side. On the east side you will find the turquoise blue beaches of the atlantic ocean. We hope you will find this site useful for your next Caribbean Vacation.
Located on the north of Cozumel Mexico island there are three big lagoons full with mangroves coves and shallow water; the three lagoons itself are so big that you won't be able to wade one around on a single fishing day, two boats with two anglers on each boat can easily fish in one of this lagoons without seeing each other in the entire fishing day, the name of this lagoons are known as : "Monte Cristo", "Paso de Balem" and "Rio de la plata" and the three lagoons are full of bonefish, some baby tarpon, some baby snook and other battlers such as barracudas, Snappers, trigger fish, etc. During the months of march to september you can find some big permit weighting around 25 pounds.
Guides and Boats...
Carlos Vega and his guides fish from Pangas. These are 18-22 foot crafts that are very stable and comfortable. The guides are experienced, well-mannered, and excellent fishermen. Some speak great English, others plenty to communicate with Americans. You won't be disappointed with this program. I've got dozens of clients that will be happy to give you a report on the quality of this Rod and Reel Adventure.ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES IN CANCUN FLYFISHING AND SPINFISHING DAY TRIPS
In additon to excellent flyfishing and light tackle flats fishing in Cancun and Cozumel there are the typical resort activities of shopping, swimming, sunbathing, and nightlife. There are also the MAYAN RUINS, great diving, and snorkeling opportunities for the nonfishing people in your group.
FISHING SEASON FOR CANCUN FLYFISHING AND SPINFISHING DAY TRIPS
The fishing is great all year round but during the winter months (Dec. to Feb.) due to the cold fronts (Nortes) the water in the lagoons gets a little too cold for the permit and bonefish, so they leave the flats sparse. All other fish species are present throughout the year. The best months for fishing all four fish species are March through November. Consider the bonefish a plus fish as you will not find too many of these in Isla Blanca. I know anglers who swear that June is the best, others say February. As always, the best time is when you can get away from the cold of winter and the stress of work!!
