FLATS FISHING - SPINFISHING AND FLYFISHING COZUMEL IN SHALLOW WATER

Flats and Lagoons...
Located on the north end of Cozumel Mexico island there are three big lagoons full with mangroves coves and shallow water; the three lagoons itself are so big that you won't be able to wade one around on a single fishing day, two boats with two anglers on each boat can easily fish in one of this lagoons without seeing each other in the entire fishing day, the name of this lagoons are known as : "Monte Cristo", "Paso de Balem" and "Rio de la plata" and the three lagoons are full of bonefish, some baby tarpon, some baby snook and other battlers such as barracudas, Snappers, trigger fish, etc. During the months of march to september you can find some big permit weighting around 25 pounds.

Guides and Boats...
Carlos Vega and his guides fish from Pangas. These are 18-22 foot crafts that are very stable and comfortable. The guides are experienced, well-mannered, and excellent fishermen. Some speak great English, others plenty to communicate with Americans. You won't be disappointed with this program. I've got dozens of clients that will be happy to give you a report on the quality of this Rod and Reel Adventure.

Fly fishing for bonefish is a great deal all year round, especially wading. Also, during the months of March through December you can find some great permit fishing weighing sometimes in excess of 25 pounds.

The trips consist basically of bonefishing in these flats. While fishing for bonefish you may also have the chance to catch permit, snook, tarpon along with ladyfish, mangrove snapper, jack, triggerfish, small shark, barracuda, etc. in a single or more fishing days.  We operate 4 flats fishing boats from 23’ to 25’ powered with 48 and 60 H.P. Yamaha motors, with the latest on safety equipment.

FLYFISHING EQUIPMENT INFORMATION FOR COZUMEL FLATS FISHING
The fly fishing in our lagoons and flats on Cozumel is done mostly wading while the fly fishing in our lagoons and flats at Isla Blanca in Cancun is done from the boat. Therefore, I would recommend all Cozumel fly fishing anglers to bring the appropriate flats wading boots or diving boots.
We recommend our anglers to bring at least two fly rods (a 9wt. and an 8wt. or 7wt.) for both Cozumel and Cancun with their matching fly reels for saltwater fishing loaded with at least 120 + yards of #20 or #30 line for backing and a floating fly line preferably Bonefish Taper WF 7-9 F for Cozumel and baby Tarpon Taper WF- 8/9 F for Cancun.
Note: the use of sinking or semi sinking lines it’s not recommended as the water in the lagoons and flats where you will be fishing in Cozumel and Cancun are shallow (1.5 to 3 feet).

Make sure to bring several one piece 9’ or 10’ feet Orvis or Maxima leaders #8, #10 and #12 for Cozumel and Cancun. Bring some coils of fluorocarbon line #12 and #15 for Cozumel and #12, #15, #20 and #40 for Cancun for shock tippets. Also, bring a good assortment of flies for bonefish and permit and a few for tarpon and snook for Cozumel and a good assortment of flies for tarpon, permit and snook and a few for bonefish for Cancun.

Very important: Every ones needs excellent
polarized sunglasses for seeing fish (without excellent eyewear you are totally wasting your time), a convenient hat, plenty of sun block screen (#50 +), bug spray, light clothing and don’t forget your camera. I am a big fan of MAUI JIM polarized lenses with the HT LENS. It is great in all light conditions. I will often spot fish before the guides because of these sunglasses. Don't skimp on this valuable part of your flyfishing tackle.
