ISLA HOLBOX TARPON LODGE GENERAL INFORMATION
I first heard about Isla Holbox fifteen years ago, but hadn't been able to get a trip together until June 2007. I had heard stories of large schools of big tarpon that were accessible with flyfishing gear or light tackle. The people telling the stories were somewhat credible (as credible as fishermen can be) so there was a little hesitation in me.  All I can say after having finished my week there is this:  The rumors are true!
Each day begins very early with a light breakfast whipped up by your faithful hosts Luciano and Italo. Cheese quesadillas with green salsa, toast with homemade marmalade, wonderful coffee or espresso, fruit of the day, orange juice, even ham and eggs. Wake up call with coffee at your door is at 5:00 AM (at least in June - times will differ slightly depending on time of year and tides) and breakfast is ready by 5:30 AM. They start early to get to the offshore tarpon grounds approximately a thirty minute run from the lodge. The first two hours of the morning with very little winds and lower light make for the best fishing for the schools of large tarpon. You will have lunch on the boat consisting of sandwiches, boiled eggs, baked chicken, potato chips, soda, snacks, and bottled water. If you want beer, you will bring it with you on the boat from the cooler at the lodge.

The fishing day is from 6:00 to 2:00. The winds pick up each afternoon to the point where fishing is very difficult and riding, even in a panga, is uncomfortable in choppy seas.

The tarpon fishing was good, but the catching was difficult in the open ocean. Tarpon are big, strong, and have very tough mouths that don't seem to want to keep a hook in them very long. The group hooked many big fish, but landed none. The smaller fish saved the day as we caught multiple tarpon in the six to ten pound range each day. And on an eight-weight fly rod, there is nothing like a ten pound, supercharged, saltwater-fed, acrobatic silver king!! We also caught mangrove snapper, mutton snapper, barracuda, jacks, corvina (speckled trout), perch, pufferfish, and snook. All in all, it was a great trip and I am confident you will love it!ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIESAT ISLA HOLBOX TARPON LODGE
There are the MAYAN RUINS, the whale sharks, passion island, sand and surf, food, and photography. And a little shopping for the interested parties.

SEASON AT ISLA HOLBOX TARPON LODGE
Similar to the other side of the peninsula at Cancun, Cozumel, and Ascension Bay, this is truly a year around fishery that only falters because of weather issues. These weather issues usually occur from July through October. So November through June is pretty "prime time". Many tarpon fishing anglers book here into August as the winds are at a minimum as they approach hurricane season (ironic, don't you think?).

HOW TO GET TO ISLA HOLBOX TARPON LODGE
Fly into Cancun, Mexico on Friday night and overnight in the hotel of your choice. On Saturday morning you will take a taxi to the HOTEL KIN MAYAB where the Holbox Transfer Service will pick you up at 10:00 AM. Other arrangements can be made for an additional charge.
